{"id":4609,"date":"2013-03-04T21:17:48","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T05:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/experimentalmath.info\/blog\/?p=4609"},"modified":"2013-03-07T21:38:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-08T05:38:58","slug":"workshop-on-reliability-in-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/experimentalmath.info\/blog\/2013\/03\/workshop-on-reliability-in-computing\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop on reliability in mathematical computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In December, the present bloggers attended a workshop on <a href=\"http:\/\/icerm.brown.edu\/tw12-5-rcem\">reliability and reproducibility<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0computational and experimental mathematics<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, which was held at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (<a href=\"icerm.brown.edu\/\">ICERM<\/a>) in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. The workshop participants included a diverse group, including computer scientists, mathematicians, physicists, legal scholars, journal editors and funding agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have previously posted a brief report on the workshop in a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/experimentalmath.info\/blog\/2013\/01\/set-the-default-to-open-reproducible-science-in-the-computer-age\">Math Drudge blog<\/a>. This report was also published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/david-h-bailey\/set-the-default-to-open-r_b_2635850.html\">Huffington Post<\/a>. The full report issued by the meeting organizers is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidhbailey.com\/dhbpapers\/icerm-report.pdf\">here<\/a>.\u00a0The meeting, and the larger themes of reliability and reproducibility in computational science, continue to attract attention, in forums such as <i>Wired<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Simons Foundation<\/em>, a large nonprofit devoted to mathematical research, published a <a href=\"https:\/\/simonsfoundation.org\/features\/science-news\/in-computers-we-trust\">feature article<\/a> on the topic. The article contrasted the free-wheeling views of Rutgers University mathematician Doron Zeilberger, who has published mathematical research papers authored by &#8220;Shalosh B. Ekhad,&#8221; a pseudonym for his computer&#8217;s number, with those of more traditional mathematicians, who avoid or distrust computation. The Simons Foundation article mentions the ICERM workshop, and includes quotes from one of the present bloggers, and some other participants at the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Now the high-tech publication <i>Wired<\/i> has picked up on the story, publishing an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2013\/03\/computers-and-math\">article<\/a> on the topic (which is basically the same as the Simons Foundation article).\u00a0Some additional press coverage is likely.
